Mooresville Man Charged With 20 Counts of Second-Degree Exploitation of a Minor

MOORESVILLE, NC – On January 21, 2024, Mooresville Police Department (MPD) Detectives

received a tip about inappropriate conduct on social media sites by an adult male, and Detectives

began an investigation. The tip indicated that the suspect was using social media sites to attempt

to meet with minors for sexual intercourse. The suspect was identified as Michael Dakota

Richardson, 21 years old, of Mooresville.

When confronted by Detectives, Richardson admitted that he had been trying to arrange a

meeting with a minor for the purpose of sexual intercourse. Richardson was arrested and charged

with (F) Solicitation of a Minor by Computer to Commit an Unlawful Sexual Act and placed in

the Iredell County Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond. Richardson posted bond and

was released.

As part of the investigation, evidence was seized from Richardson’s home and examined by

MPD Detectives. Upon examination, numerous items of explicit child pornography were located

on electronic devices belonging to Richardson. Detectives obtained warrants charging

Richardson with 20 counts of (F) Second-Degree Exploitation of a Minor.

On January 23, 2024, Richardson was arrested at his home on the new felony charges. He

received a $40,000 secured bond and was placed in the Iredell County Detention Center.

October 28 - Arrest in connection with 38-year-old cold case rape and attempted murder MOORESVILLE, NC

In early September 2022, Mooresville Police Department (MPD) Detectives were asked to assist the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI) on a cold case investigation of a rape and attempted murder that occurred 38 years ago in Missouri. The cold case involved a rape and attempted murder that occurred on March 24, 1984, in Columbia, Missouri. The victim encountered an unknown suspect while walking to work and was abducted at knifepoint. The suspect drove the victim to a dead-end road where the victim was raped. The suspect then attempted to murder the victim and discard the victim’s body in a nearby creek. The victim sustained serious life-threatening injuries but survived.
